Our Homeware

Where are your products designed, and where are they created?

All of our collections are designed in Vancouver, Canada, and crafted by skilled artisans around the globe—from Portugal to Japan, and beyond. We believe in the power of timeless designs, and sustainably craft our homeware with integrity. Learn more about the origin of our products here.

Do your ceramics have lead or any other heavy metals in them?

All of our products undergo strict testing to ensure that they’re lead safe. They’re tested for lead and cadmium, and are compliant to GCGR, FDA, and Prop 65 regulations. For lead and cadmium leachability in particular, our products undergo specific third-party testing known as the Standard Test Method for Lead and Cadmium Extracted from Glazed Ceramic Surfaces (ASTM C738-94). This is the only authorized testing method for lead and cadmium leaching that’s globally recognized. This rigorous testing ensures that the lead and cadmium leachability of our products is below detectable thresholds, and well below the maximum regulatory threshold of what is considered safe by the FDA and Prop 65. With all glazed ceramics, including our stoneware, the term “lead free” refers to very specific regulations set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and even stricter rules set by Prop 65. Businesses can use the term “lead free” when their products comply with rigorous criteria that limit trace lead and cadmium levels and leachability. Are your products dishwasher and microwave safe?

All Fable products are durably crafted for everyday use. All of our ceramics, flatware, and drinkware, including both glassware and stemware, are completely dishwasher safe. Our ceramics are also microwave safe and oven safe up to 450ºF.

Do your ceramics scratch easily?

While all semi-matte ceramics are susceptible to superficial marks from your flatware, they can be easily taken off with a good scrubber and a scouring compound. If you notice marks on your ceramics, use a scouring powder like Bar Keepers Friend to make a paste with water; lemon juice and baking soda will also work. Using the paste and a scrubber—we recommend our Tawashi Brush—give the surface of your ceramics a hearty scrub for a few seconds. After a soapy rinse, your dishes should be good as new.

I can’t decide which Fable products I love the most. Do you send samples?

We offer a 30-day trial on all of our products. If for any reason you decide your new pieces aren’t for you, just let us know and we’ll gladly take them back for a full refund, or exchange them for a different color, size, or style.

What’s this I hear about a 30-day trial? How does it work?

WWe want your new homeware to feel right for you, and sometimes you can’t know what fits best until you try it out. If you decide that your products aren’t quite right for you in the first 30 days of having them, feel free to return them for a full refund—no questions asked. Our return process is simple, just enter your details here to start a return.

And rest assured, your returned pieces won’t go to waste. All previously owned Fable products are either donated to local charities or reused at local charity events that we sponsor.

Did your Speckled White glaze change?

Yes! We are always looking for ways to improve and we adjusted our glaze to be slightly less matte in June 2020. This has helped limit those pesky gray markings that matte ceramics are susceptible to. If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to us

Did you change the shape of your pasta bowls?

Yes! Based on your feedback (and to better match the new ceramic shapes we launched in 2021), we updated the shape of our Pasta Bowls. The new shape has slightly lower and more tapered sides than the original, making them easier to stack. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Why do some ceramics have subtle flecks in them?

Our ceramics are made of stoneware, which has unique characteristics. The clay contains naturally occurring flecks that occasionally come to the surface during the firing process. In some cases, these flecks may show through lighter glazes like Cloud White and Blush Pink. At Fable, we embrace these slight variations—they’re what make our hand-finished ceramics one of a kind.

Our Bundles

Are the Cereal Bowls no longer included in your bundles?

That’s correct. After launching our new Breakfast Bowls, we decided to replace The Cereal Bowls in the Base Dinnerware Set. However, you can still shop The Cereal Bowls in sets of 4, or include them by building your own bundle with our Bundle Builder.

Can I mix and match colors within a bundle?

Yes, you can! Whether you’re buying one of our best-selling bundles or building your own, you’ll see an option to mix and match different colors for each style within that bundle.

Pre-Orders & Waitlist

When will my pre-ordered tableware arrive?

Our makers around the world are working hard to get all of your pre-ordered products in stock as quickly as possible. Every product has a different estimated ship date which you can see here. , and we’ll also send out email updates every few weeks to keep you in the loop. If you have any questions, please reach out to our customer support team here.

What if some of the items I purchased are listed in stock but others are in pre-order?

Your shipment will be split so that in-stock items are sent out to you first. As soon as they’re ready, your pre-ordered items will follow. As the shipping date for your pre-order items approaches, we’ll keep you informed with status and shipment updates.

When will my card be charged for pre-orders?

Your card will be charged when your order is placed, which secures your spot. If you decide later that you don't want to wait, chat with us, and we’ll provide a full refund.

Will you send out updates on the status of the pre-orders?

You can view shipping dates for pre-order items here. We’ll also keep you updated on the status of your pre-order as we move closer to the shipping date. You can expect to receive an email update from us every 1-2 weeks.

I signed up for the fable waitlist. When will my desired product be ready for purchase, and how will I be notified?

Each item on the waitlist has a different estimated delivery time. Rest assured, you’re in line to receive an email notification when that product becomes available for purchase, so be sure to keep an eye on your inbox! We also send out email updates every few weeks for the products that have the longest wait times to keep you informed.

Homeware Care

What is the best way to care for my new homeware?

You can find detailed care instructions for all of our products here. Below is some additional information on a few of our most popular collections:

Ceramics:

Your new ceramics are dishwasher, microwave, and oven-safe (up to 450ºF). While all semi-matte ceramics are susceptible to superficial marks from your flatware, they can be easily removed by following these tips. The bases of our ceramics are intentionally left unglazed—it’s a design detail we hope you appreciate as much as we do. If they come into contact with substances that may stain, please clean them quickly to prevent staining.

Flatware:

Feel free to put your new flatware in the dishwasher or clean it by hand—you do you. To help reduce water spots, we recommend using a rinse aid (plain white vinegar also works) in your dishwasher. We recommend rinsing it first, not overcrowding the baskets, and not mixing in other metals such as gold and silver. If washing by hand, avoid using abrasive sponges or brushes, and be sure to rinse and dry immediately afterwards.

Drinkware:

Our glassware and stemware are dishwasher safe, in both household and commercial settings. Thanks to a special ion-toughening technique, our Japanese soda-lime glassware and German crystal stemware are both scratch-resistant and nearly twice as durable as untreated drinkware, meaning they won’t break as easily—but keep in mind that all glass and crystal is still fragile to some degree, and may crack or break if dropped onto a hard surface. Treat it with care.

Does your dinnerware have any warranty?

We aim for your dinnerware to last you a lifetime. If anything happens to your order during shipping, please let us know and we’ll send you a replacement promptly.

If you happen to break a plate or chip a bowl later on, don’t worry—we sell single products so you can replace or add one at a time instead of buying a whole new set. To purchase singles, log into your Fable account and click on Single Products. (If you don’t have an account yet, create one here.)

Shipping & Returns

How much does it cost to ship?

We offer a $15 flat rate for shipping under $250. Shipping on orders above $250 is free.

When will my product ship out?

If your order was in stock, expect to receive a shipping confirmation and tracking number within 1-2 business days. If your order was on pre-order, check out the pre-order and waitlist section to learn more.

Where do you ship to?

We ship to Canada (excluding Nunavut), the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), and the United Kingdom. If you're located outside of these regions but would like to place an order, send us an email and we’ll be happy to work on a solution together. Please note that we do not currently ship to PO boxes and parcel lockers, or to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses.

Where do your products ship from, and will I have to pay any shipping duties?

Our products are first shipped from our makers—in Portugal, Japan, Germany, Italy, India, the US, and beyond—to our fulfillment centers in Canada and England, then shipped out to your home. You will not have to pay duty on your Fable products as we handle all import fees when we bring them into North America and the United Kingdom. If for any reason you are asked to pay duties on your packages, get in touch with us here.

What's your return policy? How do I return my product?

If you’re not in love with your new homeware, you have 30 days from the delivery date to exchange it or return it for a full refund. You can start a return or exchange here, and we’ll send you a shipping label to send your order back to us. Note that all returns and exchanges must be sent back in their original packaging.

Where do I check the status of my order once it’s shipped?

Once your order has been shipped, you’ll receive a confirmation and a tracking number so you can follow your package as it travels to your home.

What should I do with the packaging when my order arrives?

All of our packaging is 100% recyclable and plastic-free. To recycle the boxes, envelopes, and packing paper, flatten and place them curbside or wherever you put other recyclable products like cans, bottles, and cartons. The sustainable bio-film that cushions our dinnerware is made from potato starch and maize starch, and is fully home compostable and 100% biodegradable. Any packing peanuts shipped with your order are also made of starch and will break down in the sink with water.

What if my dinnerware is damaged when it arrives?

Shipping homeware, especially ceramics and glassware, can be tricky. If any pieces in your order arrive broken, chipped, or damaged in any way, please complete this form and we’ll work with you to make it right.

How does your add-on shipping protection work?

We want your products to land safely at your doorstep. To offer peace of mind in the event that your order is lost, damaged, or stolen, we offer an optional shipping protection service (you’ll see the add-on option at checkout) at a fixed rate of $10 for orders under $250, and $15 for orders over $250.

If you do not add shipping protection, you accept that Fable is not liable for items that are lost, stolen, or damaged. However, our customers always come first, and we’ll try our best to work with you to make it right.

Do you have an extended return policy for the holidays?

Yes! For stress-free holiday gifting, we're offering an extended 100-day window to return or exchange all purchases made between October 20th and December 15th.

How does Fable think about social impact?

As a Certified B Corporation, we take a holistic view of our production practices—from our supply chain to the design and the creation of each piece—to make sure that each step meets our standards of excellence. We ensure that the suppliers we partner with have safe and ethical working conditions (with third-party audits to confirm this), equal pay for women and minorities, and overall meet a high labor standard.

What causes does Fable support?

Our vision has always been to balance profit with purpose. For every bundle sold in the UK, we work with Magic Breakfast (Charity No. 1102510, Scottish Charity No. SC048202) to provide two healthy breakfasts to school children in disadvantaged areas.

We’ve also partnered with Inasmuch Community Society, an Abbotsford-based charity providing transitional housing, settlement services, and living support for newly arrived refugee claimants in Canada. We work closely with them to donate dinnerware sets tailored to each family or individual’s needs as they transition into permanent housing.

Are Fable’s products sustainably produced?

Our products are built to last, meant to be used every day, and are products you can feel good about having in your home. As a Certified B Corporation that’s on a mission to become a zero-waste company, we take care to only partner with makers whose commitment to sustainability aligns with our standards.

For instance, during the production of our dinnerware, nothing goes to waste. As our ceramics are made, all excess clay clippings, broken plates, and water used during production are recycled and reused. Clay clippings and broken plates are reincorporated into the production process for reuse, and broken ceramics that have already been glazed are recycled into concrete. Once the water used during production has been recycled multiple times and becomes too saturated with clay particles, it’s reused as fertilizer in local farmers’ fields. During the day, our ceramics facility is 100% solar powered.

As our glassware is made, approximately half of the materials used come from in-house recycled glass cullet (broken or waste glass). The Japanese facility that produces our glassware received a Management System Certificate for Environmental Management in 2005, and are currently working to reduce CO2 emissions by 14%, while also working to reduce material input by 3%. In addition, they are continually working to reduce energy, resource consumption, and waste. At Fable, we are working towards our aim of ensuring that our creators eventually have zero-waste facilities.

Did your prices go up?

Starting September 11, 2023, we’ve increased the pricing on some of our products by an average of 5.42%. Why? Over the past year, we’ve continued to see the cost of freight, fuel, raw materials, and packaging climb, particularly with our drinkware that’s crafted in Japan and Germany. In order to keep bringing you premium homeware without compromising on quality, we’ve had to offset these costs by increasing some of our prices.

However, not all prices have gone up—after conducting a thorough cost analysis, we were able to keep pricing on certain products the same, and even reduced the pricing on 18% of our products by an average of 7%. Our transparent pricing model works both ways; if we see production costs come down again, we will adjust our prices accordingly.
