Our Rugs
Our washable wool rugs are meticulously woven by hand in Northern India—an area celebrated as the heart of South Asia’s handloom industry. A pioneer in the textile sector since 1972, our makers weave world-class materials, handcrafted detail, and sustainable practices into every rug.
The Details Matter
For more than 50 years, our makers have approached handweaving as a form of art, working with the finest yarns to craft beautiful, high quality rugs. Each piece is a testament to tradition, honoring centuries-old technique.
The Materials
Our rugs are handwoven with 88% certified New Zealand wool and 12% natural cotton yarns. Wool fibers are enriched with lanolin, a naturally occurring wool wax that’s secreted by wool-bearing animals. This wax contributes to its soft touch, and gives it a hydrophobic nature—in other words, a natural moisture-repellency that causes moisture to bead on the rug’s surface rather than being absorbed right away. The dyes used are azo-free, or low-impact, and free of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. Unlike other machine washable and stain-resistant rugs on the market, ours are free of flame retardant and stain-repellent chemicals.
The Process
Our flat-weave rugs are meticulously crafted on a handloom by interlocking warp and weft threads, a process that’s similar to making textiles. First, natural cotton yarns are used to create a vertical warp, which serves as the structure around which the rug is woven. Next, the wool yarn is woven horizontally through the vertical warp using a handloom, ensuring that each and every fiber lands perfectly in its place. The edge of each rug is then finished by hand with a simple tonal stripe pattern. Finally, the Fable logo is carefully stitched into place.
